Wax Has a Memory? Here's Why Your First Burn Matters

When it comes to enjoying your Bode+Ev candle to the fullest, there's one golden rule I always recommend: let it burn all the way to the edge the first time you light it. Why? Because soy wax has a memory.

What Does That Mean?

Soy wax “remembers” the burn pattern from its very first light. If you extinguish your candle before the wax has had a chance to melt evenly across the surface—edge to edge—it may only melt as far as it did that first time, creating a small well or "tunnel" around the wick. That’s called tunneling, and it shortens the life of your candle.

How to Set the Memory Right

To avoid tunneling and help your candle burn evenly every time, let your first burn last long enough for the entire top layer of wax to become liquid. This typically takes:

  •  4 - 6 hours for standard-sized candles

  • A bit longer for larger vessels

This simple habit gives your candle a clean, even burn, maximizing both its lifespan and fragrance throw.

Why It Matters

At Bode+Ev, every candle is hand-poured in small batches with intention and care. Our soy wax is clean-burning, eco-friendly, and designed to give you a full sensory experience—from the first light to the final flicker. Honoring the candle’s “memory” not only protects that experience but also honors the craft that went into creating it.

Candle Care is Self-Care

Taking a moment to care for your candle is also a beautiful act of mindfulness. It’s about slowing down, setting an intention, and letting yourself fully enjoy a quiet ritual.

So next time you light your Bode+Ev candle, remember:
🕯 Let it burn to the edge.
🧠 Give it a good memory.
✨ And enjoy every moment.
