Why Your Home Smells Different in Fall: The Connection Between Scent, Memory + Home

Fall Is a Feeling: How to Make Your Home Feel Cozy This Season

There’s just something about fall.

The first cool morning. Opening the windows after months of air conditioning. Pulling out your favorite sweater. That first cup of coffee when the air actually feels crisp outside.

And, of course, lighting a candle.

Fall has a way of making us want to slow down, settle in and make home feel a little warmer. And you don’t have to completely redecorate your house to do it. Sometimes the smallest things—soft lighting, a cozy blanket and the right scent—can completely change the way a space feels.

Why Scent Matters So Much in Fall

Scent has an incredible connection to memory and emotion.

One fragrance can remind you of your grandmother’s kitchen, a favorite vacation, crisp leaves under your feet or sitting around a fire with people you love.

That’s what I love most about candles.

Yes, they make your home smell amazing. But the right fragrance can do so much more than that. It can set a mood, bring back a memory or simply make an ordinary Tuesday night at home feel a little better.

And fall gives us some of the best scents to work with.

What Does Fall Actually Smell Like?

Fall fragrance doesn't have to mean pumpkin everything.

If that's your thing, I'm here for it. But there are so many ways to make your home smell like fall.

Think warm woods, amber, sandalwood, pear, apple, vanilla, chai, honey, spice, suede and those slightly smoky notes that remind you of sitting around a fire on a cool night.

The trick is choosing a fragrance based on how you want your space to feel, not just the name on the candle.

Want something warm and comforting? Look for amber, vanilla, honey or tonka.

Want that crisp fall feeling? Apple, pear and subtle spice are beautiful choices.

Want cozy without sweet? Woods, sandalwood, suede and smoky fragrances create warmth without making your house smell like dessert.

And if you love deeper, moodier scents, fall is your season. This is when earthy woods, musk, leather and rich fragrance blends really get to shine.

Make Your Home Cozy Without Buying a Thing

Before you start filling an online cart with pumpkins and throw pillows, look around your house.

Fall can be as simple as changing the atmosphere.

Turn off the overhead lights and use your lamps. Pull out a blanket you already own. Open the windows when the temperature drops. Put on a playlist. Make something warm to drink.

Then light a candle.

That's it.

Creating a home you love doesn't always mean adding more stuff. Sometimes it's about changing how the space you're already in feels.

Choose Different Scents for Different Spaces

One of my favorite ways to use fragrance is to let different rooms have their own personality.

In the kitchen, try apple, pear, spice or something subtly sweet.

For the living room, warm woods, amber, chai, sandalwood and smoky fragrances create that cozy, lived-in feeling.

In the bedroom, I tend to lean softer—cashmere, musk, sandalwood or warm vanilla notes.

And for an entryway, choose something with presence. It's the first scent you and your guests experience when you walk through the door, so it's a great place for a fragrance that feels like your home.

Just remember: you don't need five competing fragrances burning at once. Choose scents that complement one another so your home feels layered rather than overwhelming.

Don't Forget to Actually Burn Your Candles

I know some of you are saving that candle because it's "too pretty to burn."

Burn it.

Candles are meant to be enjoyed.

On your first burn, give the wax enough time to melt close to the edges of the vessel. Before each burn, keep your wick properly trimmed and never leave a burning candle unattended.

Taking care of your candle helps it burn better, last longer and gives you the best fragrance experience possible.

And please—don't wait for company to light the good candle.

You live there. You're the occasion.

Find Your Fall Scent

At Bode+Ev, fall isn't about creating one version of what the season is supposed to smell like.

Some people want pumpkin and spice.

Some want apple and woods.

Some want smoky, earthy and moody.

And some want absolutely nothing that smells remotely like a pumpkin.

That's why I love creating fragrances with different personalities. Your home should smell like you.

Whether you're drawn to something warm and sweet, crisp and fruity, woody and grounded or deep and sophisticated, there's a fall fragrance that can change the entire mood of your space.

So open the windows, grab the blanket, pour yourself something good and light the candle you've been saving.

Fall is here and it's my favorite time of year!

Adulting needs ambiance.
